HangryTV
HangryTV didn’t survive the pandemic, but it lives on in our hearts. Here are some of our favourite films to get excited about exploring NYC and points beyond again.
HangryTV, short films to prompt, prime and connect. Over 200 restaurants featured across socials @Hangrytv. The pandemic put us on pause, but our love of food and all things culinary has not waned. We look forward to eating with you again soon. Here’s some of audience (and our) favourites. Shot on iPhone.
Let Pitmaster Chris Lilly, give you some inspiration for your 4th of July BBQ. We were at the right place at the right time at this years’ Big Apple BBQ, and got the full story from Chris Lilly himself. From the rub ingredients, to the overnight rendering, to the creation of the “charcoal moisture flavour the keeps the pork from drying out”, we were in awe of his precision set up. As they say, “Everyone knows that Bar-b-q is good for your heart and hickory smoke is good for your soul” and we can’t get to Dectaur, Alabama quick enough to eat our way through his entire menu.
Like walking into an art directors mind, Tartine is so beautiful it's hard to take it all in- the bread ovens are huge and turning out perfect loaves, yet the bakers are perfectly attired, not a hair out of place, clothes immaculate and not a bead of sweat. Someone created the future at the corner of 18th and Alabama and we stepped into it. The chocolate cake was like a flowerless brownie with beautifully airated creme on top. The creme caramel - is as god intended it- eggy custard w glorious light burnt sugar syrup at the bottom. The avocado toast on rye is open faced, Danish style in keeping with our last months theme. Chewy rye bread, spicey, tangy pepitas - like everything else, beautifully presented.
Vegan food. There I said it, unless you’re vegan or have heart issues, rare is the person who’s excited for a full meal of plant-based food. It usually lacks one or all of the basics; texture, flavour, presentation or umami. So when you get team JAJAJA mix of complex flavours and stand-alone textures, your taste buds do back flips and you lose your tiny, little vegetarian mind. They’re not trying to mimic meat. They bring the complexity that meat adds and they win on all fronts. The nachos were as visually exciting as they were to eat. The mezcal mushroom tacos where everything you want from a mushroom base and the tinga tostada trio was awesome, especially the hemp queso. We didn’t have time to start day drinking, we will find time soon, but can ….highly recommended though the Matcha Coconut Martini in the meantime.
EAK Ramen, West Village. Heaven in a bowl of soup... that is a pat of butter just waiting to melt into the broth with their bespoke noodles. They have the creamiest tofu ever!
Hands down, best West Coast Mexican food in NY. Fresh, hand-made tortillas set the stage for all the flavours to settle into that classic mix of smoked meat, tangy fresh lime, bright onions, spices and guacamole richness. It’s packed for a reason but the line moves quickly and there’s gold at the end of it.
From Henan province, to you with love and subtle yet mighty flavors delight but don’t overpower. Hand pulled noodles with cumin marinated chicken and the pork dumplings with caramelized onions, leave you always wanting more. The cucumbers and bok choy, super fresh. It’s just round the way and worth seeking out.
The first authentic destination Thai restaurant in Queens, is LEGEND and still slamming. We had the dried watercress salad, deep fried watercress, shrimp, squid with Thai chilies, fish sauce and lime, followed by the shrimp salad with fish sauce, lime, cilantro onion, chili and lemongrass, and the curry of our dreams, panang curry with beef. They make it traditional home style with a thicker consistency.
No time to get to Shanghai? Get to Fei Long Market Food Court in Sunset Park and go to Shanghai Family Dumpling House for soup dumplings instead. We had the beef curry, vegetable and pork. The beef curry had an amazing subtle flavour and the pork and veg were classic.
We made the pilgrimage to this years Vendy winner, Tacos El Rancho in Sunset Park and we’re so glad we did. The tacos are delicious and their salsas are truly pace setters. The red will blow your mind. We had the fresh sautéed vegetarian, with avocado and cotilla cheese on top and the pork and chicken. They’re partnering with a spectacular butcher with the biggest wall of chilies we’ve ever seen. Wonder what’s coming next?
Vegetarians and vegans, look away now. This is the high pro glow writ large. Even the baked beans have pork and beef in them… (so good) Cara kills it with her broccoli salad and Dante brings it with his potato salad, but the stars of the show are the meat. We had Canadian wild boar, brisket and pork ribs. The boar was notably, superbly awesome. We washed it all down with The People’s Zin, a Zinfandel from CA, a delicious and yet socially responsible and sustainable wine. I don’t know how, but we were hungry again the next day…. We live to eat.
We had to pay homage to the best Mexican food in SF and have the spicy super all-in burrito with chicken, pinto beans and fresh avocado, and the gorgeous grilled flour quesadilla with super chunky guacamole and delicious salsa. It was out last stop on the way to the airport. Next time it will be our first!
